The Majority of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants Use Smartphones for Work

by Alejandro Alvarez

Year-over-year, there are significantly more nurse practitioners and physicians assistants using a smartphone for professional purposes, according to Kantar Media’s Sources & Interactions 2014 Study – Physician Assistants/Nurse Practitioners Edition. The percent of these healthcare professionals who use these devices for work reasons increased by 7% compared to 2013, and increased 14% compared to 2012..

Both groups continue to use smartphones less than physicians’ do for work, but the gap is closing. The Kantar Media Sources & Interactions Study, March 2014 – Medical/Surgical Edition found that 79% of physicians surveyed use a smartphone for professional purposes compared to about 2/3 of surveyed NPs and PAs.

Among physician assistants and nurse practitioners who are smartphone users, the type of mobile application used most often on their smartphones is Diagnostic Tools/Clinical Reference, followed by Drug and Coding References. PAs are slightly more likely to use mobile apps on their smartphones for work reasons compared to NPs.

Kantar Media’s Sources & Interactions™ Studies offer a detailed examination of healthcare professionals’ online and mobile activities, e-detailing experience, and exposure to (and evaluation of) information sources including traditional and emerging media, pharma reps, CME, conventions and more. The Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner Edition, conducted every year, is designed to profile physician assistants' and nurse practitioners’ media use in these areas of interest to healthcare marketers and media professionals.
